How we score plumbers in the Ontario Plumber Directory
What this page covers
Ontario Plumber Directory currently scores 300 plumbing businesses across the province, from emergency plumbers in Toronto to drain and gas fitting contractors in Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton and Brampton. This page explains exactly how a composite score gets built, why we weight the signals the way we do, and where the honest limits sit. If you want to see the scoring in action, our emergency plumbing rankings are a good place to start, or head back to the home page to browse by city.
The five signals and their weights
Every score out of 100 is built from five measured signals. They're listed here from heaviest to lightest:
- Sentiment (28%): a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, praise and complaints alike, not just the star count attached to them.
- Rating (26%): the business's aggregate Google star rating.
- Volume (20%): how many reviews a business has, log-scaled so that ten reviews don't get treated the same as five hundred.
- Recency (11%): how recently customers have actually left reviews.
- Completeness (15%): whether a listing has a working phone number, website, hours and address on record.
Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average is a summary, and summaries hide patterns. Two plumbing companies can both sit at 4.4 stars while one of them has a string of recent reviews describing the same problem: no-shows, surprise callout fees, a botched water heater install. The star rating won't tell you that. Reading what people actually wrote will. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw rating itself: it's the only signal that catches a business trending downward, or one that consistently earns trust on the specific work that matters, like emergency call response or leak detection accuracy.
Why the other signals matter
Rating still counts for a lot, because it's the clearest single measure of overall customer satisfaction and it's what most homeowners check first. Volume matters because a business with six reviews and a perfect average hasn't proven much yet, so we log-scale it rather than letting review count alone inflate a score. Recency matters because plumbing companies change: staff turn over, ownership changes, service quality shifts, and a business that hasn't been reviewed in two years tells you less than one reviewed last month. Completeness matters for a practical reason: if you can't find a phone number, hours or an address, the best score in the world won't help you get a plumber out to a burst pipe.
Where the confidence limits are
We label scores honestly. A business with few recent reviews gets marked as a low-confidence score, because a handful of reviews, however glowing, isn't a reliable signal on its own. We don't republish reviews verbatim; we synthesize the themes across them, and we link out to the Google listing itself so you can read the source reviews and judge for yourself.
Scores are earned, not sold
Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and the underlying review data only. Paid placement, on the rare occasions it exists, is always labelled clearly as paid and never affects the score itself. Where a list involves any editorial judgment in picks or ordering, that's disclosed on the page itself. There's no pay-to-rank system here.
Who's behind this
Ontario Plumber Directory is published to connect Ontario homeowners and property managers with licensed plumbers and plumbing contractors, covering emergency plumbing, water heater installation, drain and sewer cleaning, leak detection, gas fitting, and bathroom and kitchen plumbing work across Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton and Brampton. Rankings are maintained by Petra Vogel, Content Lead, who oversees the editorial standards behind this methodology. Data is refreshed monthly, and each listing carries a "last verified" stamp so you can see the maintenance is active, not a one-time snapshot. Questions about a listing or a score can be sent through the enquiry form on this website.
FAQ
- How often is the scoring data updated?
- The full directory is refreshed monthly, and each listing shows a last verified date so you can see when it was last checked.
- Can a plumbing business pay to improve its score?
- No. Scores come only from the weighted signals described on this page. Paid placement, when it exists, is always labelled as such and never changes a business's score.
- Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
- Star averages can hide patterns. Two businesses can share the same rating while one has repeated recent complaints about the same issue. Reading what reviews actually say catches that, which is why sentiment is weighted highest.
- What does a low-confidence label mean?
- It means a business has few recent reviews, so the score is based on limited data. We label these clearly rather than presenting them with the same confidence as businesses with a larger, more recent review history.
